This week: what did you do on your Christmas vacation?

If you’re Ashley Parker, Capitol Hill correspondent for the New York Times, you go on a busman’s holiday — a quite good one — to Honolulu, to cover that most languid of Barack Obama events, the presidential vacation. We get the full download from Ashley of a rare ‘vacation without waves,’ except those she discovered off Waikiki Beach during her off-hours surfing lessons.

Some of the non-pool reporting Ashley did while on Oahu was the de rigueur ‘POTUS vacation piece’; a dive into the burgeoning debate on where President Obama will establish his library and foundation; an exploration of the president’s faith; and an off-the-beat foray into the unique culture of Hawaii as an Asian tourist mecca for those that want to expend a few hundred rounds from an automatic rifle at one of the state’s many shooting ranges.

At the bottom of the hour, we take a trip in the Wayback Machine to 1964. It was, according to The American Experience, “the year the Beatles came to America, Cassius Clay became Muhammad Ali and three civil rights workers were murdered in Mississippi. It was the year that Berkeley students rose up in protest, African Americans fought back against injustice in Harlem and Barry Goldwater’s conservative revolution took over the Republican Party.”

On Tuesday, January 14 at 8:00 pm (check local listings), the American Experience, the magnificent PBS series from WGBH in Boston, tackles 1964, now 50 years in the rearview mirror. Getting ready for that debut, we’ll be joined by Stephen Ives, the director of so many PBS documentary masterworks, to talk about his latest film.
