As President Obama prepares his State of the Union and Chris Christie works to rebound off his State of the State — and as I get ready to head off to the World Economic Forum in Davos — the high and the mighty are in the spotlight. And yet, we’ll ramp back this episode and ask the existential question: do ordinary people change the world?

We’re honored this week to have Brad Meltzer, New York Times best selling author of nine novels, most recently The Fifth Assassin, four graphic novels and TV shows that are near and dear to my heart. Now, he has a new series for a dramatically younger audience, of which my son  and daughter are devout readers: I am Abraham Lincoln and I am Amelia Earhart, out this week from Dial Books, part of the “Ordinary People Change the World” series.

At the bottom of the hour, in these serious times, our first full-fledged comedian on PoliOptics: Paul Mercurio. Paul is the pride of Providence, Rhode Island, host of the wickedly popular Paul Mercurio Show and one of the hardest working guys on the stand-up circuit. He has had a long running relationship with “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report” and his big break came courtesy of Jay Leno.

With Leno about to pass the mic to Jimmy Fallon, we’ll talk about Jay’s legacy in comedy, and Paul and I will chat about tomorrow’s epic 15th match-up between Tom Brady of our New England Patriots and Peyton Manning of the humorless Denver Broncos.
